Retro scene releases discussion

Post by Deleted User 6280 »

Myles suggested we need a general thread about retro (1998-2002) scene ISO releases like there was on ROM Shepherd, and I agree.

I will start with a game I downloaded this morning and I first thought it is original:
POPULOUS.3.THE.BEGINNING-PARADiGM
Why did I thought that?
-it says on NZB King: 1998 SCENE FILES NOT 2002 REPACK
-I thought if SFV has dates in it like 14:26.27 1998-11-04, that it's 100% original. But thinking more about it, this can be generated even right now, you can simply change date in Windows to be close to release date.

But now I searched srrDB, and I see this:
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/P ... G-PARADiGM
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/P ... iSO_REPACK
Same releases, second one is marked as a repack, first one has PARADiGM in the name, but we all know they used PDMiSO in 1998.

I also opened the BIN and it was strange to me that folder dates are from December 1998, and it says in the NFO the game was released in November 1998.

Populous_3_The_Beginning-PDMiSO is also on the missing list, so my verdict:
100% a repack

EDIT 2019.02.05:
Some additional evidence it is a repack:
http://www.forum.torrminatorr.com/viewt ... 096#p22096

So what I learned so far in determining repacks:
1. If it's not even on srrDB. That means it's very unlikely that yours is scene. And even if it were, you don't have anything to compare it to.
2. Most obvious way to tell is if the RAR parts are 50 MB instead of 15 MB, then you don't have to look further.
3. Another simple and quick way is to open the RAR's and check the date of the bin/cue. If it's later than the release date of the game, that means it's a repack.
But date can even be earlier as these repackers are sloppy and don't check the exact release date of the game.
Game may also be a re-release, that's mostly CLASSIC, RARNeT and iNTERNAL releases. But most of the time the release year is written in the NFO.
4. Of course, bin/cue date can also be modified. But you can mount the bin and check the folder dates. They shouldn't be later than the date in the NFO, but they can be some days earlier.

I will paste a list of all major missing games on Pastebin. List of repacks is not that big for now, so I will just paste it here.

I have so more questions, so I hope someone else joins the discussion.
But 1998 is almost pointless to discuss, I only found 10 originals out of almost a 100, so that means only 10% got preserved.
1999 is better, I think I even got 50%. And 2000 90-95%.
I will replace the missing games with Redump.org games which I think are the second best option. But it's too bad there isn't some forum where you can share them, so my major source is Archive.org.

Of course there is no rule we can't share them here under P2P Released Games, but it has to be some interest first. I have quite a collection of them already.

Added in 27 minutes 39 seconds:
This one is interesting:
OutRage-DVNiSO
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/OutRage-DVNiSO

It was very hard to find, so I checked the NFO and googled outrage nms software game. This is what I found:
https://www.mobygames.com/company/nms-software-ltd
When NMS went bust the racing game Hover / Outrage was finished (gold) but never got released.

But I don't even like to collect less known games and games which were scored less than 70%. I check the scores at our very good Slovenian magazine:
https://jocker.eu.org/arhiv.php
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joker_(Sl ... _magazine)
I can't say for sure as I don't know them all, but it was (last number was October 2017) probably one of the best if not the best video game magazines in the world.
Sadly it's not even listed here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_v ... _magazines
But it's understandable, as the population is only 2mil and the magazine had a circulation of only around 10.000 in it's best years, in the end around half less.
What I like the most is that their scores were very thought through and they always took account of scores of previous games. It's not like with some magazines like PC Format where they were almost random.
But I checked a lot of games on Metacritic and the scores are +/- 5 for 95% of games, so that's also a place to look.
Serbian Svet kompjutera is also probably in the top 5 in the world, but sadly they don't have a score archive.

Missing Scene ISO Games 1998-2001 (133 games)

I took DAMNER's list (2826 games), it was posted on ROM Shepherd, and only kept the most important releases and added 8 (now 6) that were missing (although strange that they are all well known), as these big lists can be a bit overwhelming.
https://justpaste.it/15lcx

These are my added 6 releases:

Code: Select all

GP500-DVNiSO
Midtown.Madness-RiSCiSO
NBA.Inside.Drive.2000-DVNiSO
Rainbow_Six_Eagle_Watch-FLT
Return.To.Na.Pali.Unreal.Addon-DVNiSO
Superbike.World.Championship-DVNiSO
I scratched Official_Formula_1_Racing-FLT from the list on 19th February 2019, I guess it was just hard to find.
3rd March 2019 - also deleted Flight_Unlimited_3-FLT

I didn't include later releases, but these are some of them:

Code: Select all

Command.And.Conquer-Red.Alert-iND
Grim.Fandango.iNTERNAL-BiRDFLUSUX
Leisure.Suit.Larry.Love.For.Sail.CLASSIC-MONKEYiSO

The.Secret.of.Monkey.Island.CD.Version.iNTERNAL-BiRDFLUSUX
The.Secret.of.Monkey.Island.iNTERNAL-BiRDFLUSUX

These are obtainable without a problem, I don't know why he listed them:

Code: Select all

I can't find these 2:
Heretic_2-DVNiSO
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/Heretic_2-DVNiSO

Starcraft_Brood_War-CiFE
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/S ... d_War-CiFE

Only these repacks:
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/Heretic.2-DVNiSO
bin/cue are dated 1998.11.23, which is close to the release date in NFO - 1998.11.24, but RAR parts are named dvn-her2.rar instead of H2.RAR. Bin size is 781.303.824 B instead of 776.658.624 B.
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/S ... __repacked
Starcraft has at least the same BIN hash. bin/cue are dated 1998.12.13, NFO says 1998.12.18, so that is too far apart. RAR parts are named cife-starbw.rar instead of broodwar.001.

Starcraft_Brood_War-CiFE should be available. Thircase is even registered on this forum, but wasn't here for a month. I will write him a PM anyway, one month is not that long and he may come back some day.

I can't even find these 2 later releases:
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/S ... loneCD-EBF
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/S ... al.ISO-iND

Only this one:

Oh, you're the guy who gave me the very rare FIFA.2000-DEViANCE. Thank you so much.
I got StarCraft.Broodwar.WinAll-VALK now, but had to repair one part using QuickPar.
While writing this post, also StarCraft.WinAll-VALK, sometimes it's enough to even know what to look for.

I always knew DIVINE.DIVINITY-DEVIANCE and the likes are not really missing, but just hard to find. Because it's on srrDB and not on a missing list.
I even had to rename the title of my missing games, because only Divine Divinity was missing from 2002.

Of course, please upload:
Starcraft_Brood_War-CiFE
DIVINE.DIVINITY-DEVIANCE

If it's no trouble, also:
StarCraft.CLONECD-iND
Starcraft.Broodwar.CloneCD-EBF

kkkk, I'd appreciate it if you could upload those well.

Regarding NHL.99-ISOLATiON, Is there evidence that this game was released by another group before the ISOLATiON release? The reason i'm asking is to determine if it is a LATER RELEASE or REPACK or RE-RELEASE or a combination of this?

Post by Deleted User 6280 »

I will first explain to others what each of those means. I came up with those names back on ROM Shepherd, but re-release and later release sound similar, so even I mix them up sometimes. But it was released at a later time, so I don't know which other word to use.
REPACK - If someone packs the game which didn't came from the same scene release again into a scene format, trying to fool us with modifying file dates to be as close to scene release date. Sometimes bin hash is the same, so at least the contents are fine, but it's still a repack.
RE-RELEASE - That means the ISO existed when the game was released, but groups re-released it several years later because the first release got lost. These are still better than nothing. Some even have original ISO, maybe only new crack is added, like with both Commandos JEDiSO. But some have a new installer, like CLASSICS releases. I don't like those very much.
LATER RELEASE - That means only RIP existed when the game was released. These are mostly for 1993-1997 games when scene didn't yet release ISO's. In my observations they are made from 2002 to 2012.

NHL_99-CiFE is also on the missing list. I doubt anyone knows which release was first and why there were 2. There were some knowledgeable guys on ROM Shepherd, but I still doubt they would know this.
ISOLATiON was released 2 months after CLS rip, so CiFE could very likely be the first release somewhere in July 1998.
http://predb.me/?search=nhl+99
http://pre.corrupt-net.org/
https://predb.org/search/nhl+99/all

I'm not sure what they mean by (again) in the NFO. Do they mean because it's a re-release after CiFE? Why would they even do that, dupes aren't allowed in scene, unless it's FINAL or GOOD BIN. Or do they mean NHL 1998 was also the best, so NHL 1999 is again the best.
But it seems more likely to me it's the first.
In anyway, 2 months after a rip is quite a lot, so I would just say this is a re-release.
But yours is of course a repack of a re-release, bin/cue are 2016, folders in bin are 2001.

I see you also have Caesar_3-iSOLATiON and Trespasser-iSOLATiON, you can also check those and see if you can find anything.

WE are sure but cd was fucked..and the install was stopping at 99%. Here is the ok cd..
Not true at all, it installs just fine. And this is not even CD2 (play CD), it has the same size and hash (8D98ED24) as CD1 (install CD) from Abes_Exodus-FLT:
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/Abes_Exodus-FLT

KINGPIN.GOOD.BIN-DVNiSO
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/K ... BIN-DVNiSO
So, as many of us found out later today, FLT's version has some bin errors. Three of us wasted a disc on FLT's release and could not get it to work. Now that the scene is starting to take notice of these errors, we feel that you will appreciate an error free release of a major title. Our has been completely tested with binchunker 1.60.
Kingpin-FLT works just fine, and both are exactly the same when mounted. Both also need a No-CD patch.
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/Kingpin-FLT

For archiving, I would just keep the original Abes_Exodus-FLT and both Kingpin's or just the DVNiSO.

DRIVER-DVNiSO
Clear repack with 50MB parts:
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/Driver-DEViANCE

https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/DRIVER-DVNiSO
Only orange two sfv's are of the original release. Red too, but it's not original sfv. So first thing to check would be if the RAR names are even dvn-drvr. Only then should you compare hashes.

Reason I'm writing this is they went so far they even changed the date of bin/cue to match the release date. It should be 1999.09.27 04:21 and not 1999.09.27 15:16.

I will upload it here:

I think I covered every hard to discern repack now. That means they even changed the date of the bin/cue.
This is my list of them:

Code: Select all

DRIVER-DVNiSO
HERETIC.2-DVNiSO
Need_for_Speed_III_Hot_Pursuit-PDMiSO
POPULOUS.3.THE.BEGINNING-PARADiGM
Starcraft_Brood_War-CiFE
Starcraft-CiFE (CiFE release didn't even exist, only KALISTO)
Except NFS3. I already talked about it in Populous 3 topic, but I will describe it properly now.

Need_for_Speed_III_Hot_Pursuit-PDMiSO
Both on srrDB are repacks:
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/N ... t-PARADiGM
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/N ... __repacked

But look at the first sfv in second link, that is the original release that is lost. RAR names should be nfs3w.rar instead of pdm-nfshp.rar.
Repack also has modified bin/cue dates to be the same as in NFO - 1998.09.10. But folders in BIN are dated 1998.10.07.
There's also quite a few release names floating around, mine in red is the right one.

Here are the threads on this forum:
http://www.forum.torrminatorr.com/viewt ... =23&t=6357
http://www.forum.torrminatorr.com/viewt ... =23&t=6700
And 777's post:
http://www.forum.torrminatorr.com/viewt ... 131#p14131

Discworld_Noir_Final-FLT
Just regarding the release name.
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/D ... d_Noir-FLT
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/D ... _Final-FLT
Second should be the right one. Proof from the NFO:
Discworld Noir *Final* (c) GT Interactive
HWN this week released a Beta, have no dout this is the 100% Final. In any case, anything that isn't a final is a beta in the ISO scene.

HEROES.OF.MIGHT.AND.MAGIC.3.FINAL-DVNiSO
Heroes.of.Might.and.Magic.III.FINAL-DVNiSO
I know it's missing, but it still bothers me which is the real release name. I have written both on my missing list.

THIEF.THE.DARK.PROJECT-DVNiSO
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/T ... ECT-DVNiSO
Thief-The_Dark_Project-DVNiSO
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/T ... ect-DVNiSO
Again 2 release names. I have both of them with different sized NFO and sfv, I just kept both.
EDIT 14th March 2019: DVNiSO usually uses all caps and dots, although there are some releases with underscores like Elite_Darts-DVNiSO.

Blood_II_The_Chosen-FLT
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/B ... Chosen-FLT
Blood2_Final-FLT
https://www.srrdb.com/release/details/Blood2_Final-FLT
First name should be correct, there is no mention of final in the NFO.

I found DOX Collections while searching for CRIMSON.SKIES.FIX.FOR.RAZOR-DEViANCE: Previously I had this bookmarked, if you search "DOX-Collection", but they're all dead:

These won't/shouldn't work as they are outdated. When looking for DOX Collection, look for poster named "Costello@home.com (Costello)". His nzbs should still work.

Costello is on my second link. But they're all red, that's why I thought swedishpwr's would be better. But you're right, they are older.
I'll just try when I clear some space on my hard drive, last few days I get disk full message at least 3 times per day.

I'm also having problems with this Crimson Skies fix NFO. It has duplicate lines, but I can't seem to fix them in Notepad++, only manually. And it's not the first NFO like this. Some sfv's are also affected. But I never thought of fixing them.
I tried this, but it's still not the same as the NFO from srrDB:
https://medium.com/@heitorhherzog/compa ... 1938ed7009

EDIT:
This is a little better (under Commentaries, not video), but it still deletes the empty lines that should be there:

Code: Select all

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpMDtu3UwOs
I also remember you can set EOL from Macintosh to Windows, under Edit -> EOL Conversion, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

There were some very knowledgable guys on ROM Shepherd. I even have all the important posts saved in txt, also for this problem. This for example:
Vertical stratch in .nfos is a consequence of changing .nfo file format.
Usually nfo's were in Linux (CL) but there are that reformatted on MAC giving double lines and breaks ASCII layout.
EditPadPro7or Swiss File Knife (SFK) [- more preferred, command line], can help fixing those.

It doesn't matter if they are red or green. It only matters when the filesize of a post is suspiciously wrong and the post itself is green, like a 2001 DOX Collection of that swedishpwr has about 30mb or so. I don't know if that's because it's outdated (3,500+ days) or these 30mbs is all he posted. Believe me I've downloaded hundreds of posts with "red light", especially from Costello, and they always were complete and worked fine (no missing parts or anything). Obviously there are cases when they don't work, but it's like 1 of 25 cases.

That's what I do too. Whether you should left these blank lines as they are or get rid of them - it's up to you. One thing is for sure, NFOs and SFVs are NEVER 1:1 to what was originally created by the members of the group, which did that certain release. They always come from at least third hand. And while srrdb is a good reference point, to see what exists and what not, you'll never know how many edits NFOs and SFVs have been through.
